Celebrating Black Indigenous Creativity
Rooted in over 15 years of grassroots research Ateliê Mukambu articulates a Black-Indigenous gaze that is both political and spiritual—one that reclaims territory, memory, and future through art as a tool for healing, resistance, and transformation. It practices a decolonial form of globalization grounded in quilombola and Indigenous lifeways, working to expand existential, physical, and political territories.
Maya Quilolo’s vision infuses Ateliê Mukambu with a commitment to embodied knowledge, where art is not merely aesthetic but a practice of territorial recognition and ancestral continuity. By engaging in human rights education, agroecology, and international advocacy, Ateliê Mukambu forms a powerful nexus of community, art, and political strategy, where the silenced voices—particularly of quilombola women and children—gain space to intervene in local to global political arenas.
This gaze is not merely about looking outward—it is about re-rooting in place, memory, and the long paths laid by ancestors.
